About us

A Neighborhood Animal Hospital. With Unusual Depth.

Most Philadelphia animal hospitals are one of two things: small neighborhood clinics, or large referral centers with long waits. 2nd Street is neither — we’re the vet you walk to on a Saturday morning, with the credentials you’d expect from a teaching hospital.

Our story

A Philadelphia animal hospital rooted in the spirit of Northern Liberties.

We’ve been on 2nd Street since 2005. Same corner, same mission, very different capabilities now. What started as a small general practice has grown into a full-service veterinary hospital with CT imaging, orthopedic surgery, in-house diagnostics, and a dedicated hospital — while still knowing most of our clients (and their pets) by name.

We treat every patient like they’re our own — because, honestly, a lot of our patients belong to people on the team. Our veterinarians’ dogs sleep under their desks. Our staff’s rabbits come in for nail trims. Your pet joins that circle the day you walk in.

If you live or work in Northern Liberties, Fishtown, or anywhere across Philadelphia and you want a veterinary hospital that takes your pet’s health as seriously as you do — welcome. We’re glad you’re here.

What you can count on

Four Commitments We Don’t Compromise On

Fear Free, every visit

Soft lighting, pheromone diffusers, separated cat/dog waiting. Your pet shouldn’t dread coming here.

AAHA Accredited

Fewer than 15% of U.S. veterinary practices meet AAHA standards. We voluntarily hold ourselves to them.

Everyone belongs

A diverse team and a diverse clientele. Whoever you are and whatever you brought in the carrier — you’re welcome.

Here for the long haul

Same corner since opening. Same commitment to Northern Liberties. Your vet isn’t going anywhere.

Why Philadelphia keeps coming back

What Sets 2nd Street Apart

CT & endoscopy, on-site

Most Philadelphia animal hospitals refer these out. We do them here — faster answers, fewer trips.

AAHA Accredited

Fewer than 15% of U.S. vet practices meet AAHA standards. We proudly announce that we are AAHA Accredited

Orthopedic surgery performed in-house

TPLO, CCL repair, fracture fixation. You won’t be passed to a specialty hospital for the common ones.

A board-certified avian specialist on staff

Dr. Sharonda Meade (ABVP-Avian) is one of the few in greater Philly.

A double-boarded internist leading the team

Dr. Sam Hurcombe carries ACVIM and ACVECC — depth usually found at teaching hospitals.

Everyone belongs here

A diverse team, a diverse clientele, and a practice where every pet parent feels seen.
